Our foundation was established on July 24, 1740, by Grand Vizier Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha, one of the Ottoman Empire's distinguished statesmen, with the aim of providing charitable and social services. In line with the principles outlined in our founder's Foundation Deed (Vakıf Senedi), we have been pursuing our mission of benefiting society in the fields of education, health, and social welfare for over three centuries with the same dedication as on the first day. As a subsidiary foundation, our most fundamental duty is to preserve and perpetuate this deep-rooted legacy.
Our foundation was established on July 24, 1740, by Grand Vizier Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha, one of the Ottoman Empire's distinguished statesmen, with the aim of providing charitable and social services. In line with the principles outlined in our founder's Foundation Deed (Vakıf Senedi), we have been carrying out our mission of benefiting society in the fields of education, health, and social welfare for over three centuries with the same sensitivity as on the first day. As a subsidiary foundation, our most fundamental duty is to preserve and perpetuate this deep-rooted legacy.
With our new management team that took office in 2023, we aim to transform the Hobyarlı Ahmet Paşa Foundation from an institution that relies solely on rental income into a dynamic force that invests in transparent, accountable, and sustainable projects. Our goal is to grow this heritage, a legacy of our ancestors, in a way that will bring even more benefit, while remaining faithful to our foundation charter.
Principle of Trust
Service to Humanity
Our Founding Year
The goals outlined in Grand Vizier Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha's endowment continue to guide us today. In this spirit, we focus on the most fundamental needs of society and strive to provide lasting and sustainable benefits in the areas of education, health, and social solidarity.
Grand Vizier Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha stated in his endowment deed, written in 1740, that the primary purpose of this structure was “to attain the pleasure of Allah and to serve humanity.” This charitable hand extended to education, health, and the needy is the most valuable legacy he left us.
The interest shown in the historical identity of our Foundation's founder, Grand Vizier Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha, is a source of pride for us. However, this interest occasionally brings along widespread misinformation and historical misconception. As the Foundation, in order to keep our founder's name and legacy alive correctly, we consider it a duty to clarify this important issue.
In public opinion, our foundation's founder, the 18th-century statesman Grand Vizier Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha, is often confused with the 16th-century statesman Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha, who lived approximately two centuries before him. These two important historical figures are representatives of completely different eras, different sultans, and most importantly, completely different legacies.
To prevent this historical error, we would like to clearly state the fundamental differences between the two statesmen:
Grand Vizier Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha (Our Founder): Born in Foça, Izmir in the early 1700s, he served as Grand Vizier during the reign of Sultan Mahmud I. His greatest legacy in history is this foundation, which keeps his name alive and serves our society today, as well as the charities and fountains he had built in Istanbul.
Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha: Lived in the 1500s and served as Grand Vizier during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. His historical identity is remembered for the political events and controversies of his own era.
At the root of this historical misconception lies the abundance of statesmen with the title "Pasha" in Ottoman history and the confusion of information sources over time. However, whatever the reason, equating our founder's name and personality with the identity and actions of another historical figure and subjecting him to unjust evaluations is, above all, a disrespect to historical facts and the cherished memory of our founder.
The sole purpose of the Hobyarlı Ahmet Pasha Foundation is to keep its founder's name and philanthropic vision alive and to serve our society in the fields of education, health, and social welfare. Our request from the public is to rely on correct sources when evaluating historical personalities and not to allow a vision that has served society for centuries to be overshadowed by baseless misinformation.
